Stakeholder Engagement for the Northern Ireland Civil Service

Our associate trainer Tanya Popeau delivered a one-day Stakeholder Engagement course for the Northern Ireland Civil Service (Department of Communities) in Belfast.

The Challenge

The Governance and Commercial Services team within the Department of Communities (NI) wanted to learn new innovative strategies for stakeholder mapping, analysis and management.

The team was already experienced but needed new strategies to address some of their current challenges.  The team was in the process of rolling out new tech systems and ways of supporting and capturing data from their wider teams.  As with all change management, not all parties wanted to use the new system and were opposed to some of the new changes.

Solution

Dods Training introduced several techniques.

Personas

Firstly, Personas which is a way to focus on stakeholder analysis.  This technique allows for a deep dive into the characters and individuals that you will be working with. It analyses their behaviours and helps to consider how you may tailor your projects and approaches to meet the needs of the stakeholders.

Innovation Project Cycle

We also worked on the innovation project cycle and explored ways to introduce new ideas, and test and prototype these ideas with relevant stakeholders

Theory of Change

Another key technique we used was the Theory of Change, which helps to plan large scale projects. It outlines the key steps and activities that you would take to deliver the project, and achieve the intended outcomes.

Results

All of the techniques are very interactive and we worked with the team to apply them directly to their current projects and programmes.

“We had great communication with Dods Training from the outset as they really wanted to understand our specific requirements and prep the training to suit our needs.  Having the trainer involved in these meetings really helped us explore exactly what we wanted to achieve.

Our training on the day was excellent as Tanya built a great rapport with us, utilising her vast experience and relevant knowledge to the activities we carried out. It helped us develop our process going forward.”
