Programme: Understanding, working with and influencing the EU

(Delivered in Zagreb, Croatia, 2014)

The client

In March 2014 Dods Training designed and delivered a bespoke EU programme in association with the British Embassy Zagreb for the Croatian Diplomatic Academy.

The problem

Having attended one of our successful EU Training Programmes (LINK) we regularly run for the FCO, participants from Croatia requested that Dods Training work closely with British Embassy Zagreb for the Croatian Diplomatic Academy during the EU accession process. The diplomats who attended the course wanted a highly practical workshop to equip them with a thorough understanding of how they could best support Government objectives in delivering positive policy outcomes for Croatia through the EU.

Our actions

Dods Training put together a highly practical programme focused on how EU-focused Croatian diplomats could engage with and influence stakeholders in Brussels, as well as providing an insight into the structure of the institutions. We worked closely with the British Embassy in Zagreb to put together a workshop which fulfilled all objectives.

The programme imbued participants with a thorough understanding of how the EU institutions are structured and how they make decisions, greater knowledge of how to achieve success in priority policy areas and how Embassies can support positive policy outcomes for Croatia through the EU, and in particular how the reporting and lobbying of Embassies feeds into Croatian influencing strategies. The training also sought to increase participants’ confidence in the use of practical tools for working with the EU.

Using our extensive network of associate trainers we picked a training team comprising an EU policy expert and former Ambassador within the EU to deliver the programme.

Conclusions

The interactive approach and insight of the expert training team were well received with 100% of delegates rating the programme, materials and trainers as either ‘good’ or ‘excellent’.

The programme’s popularity drew in additional delegates from Kosovo.
