Client: Lagos State Parliament

Programme: Washington Explained

(Delivered in Washington D.C., United States of America, 2013)

The client

Following the design and delivery of a successful course focused on the UK structure of governance, the Lagos State Parliament asked Dods Training for a week-long highly bespoke programme explaining the US political system.

The problem

A delegation from the Lagos State Parliament wanted to travel to Washington DC and participate in a study visit based on strengthening their knowledge of US federal and state institutions and processes, visit key sites of interest and meet with high-level personnel as well as their own counterparts in the American system.

Our actions

Utilising our US-based consultants as well as flying experts from London to DC to meet the group, Dods Training put together an innovative and comprehensive five day programme.

Our experienced training team included a former ambassador, political adviser and former adviser to Congressman Mark Souder, with guest speakers, including a state senator, for this US-based programme. Day one on the Machinery of US Government was led by a former ambassador and detailed the structure of the constitutional history as well as providing its origins and history. Day two provided an introduction to the key institutions including Congress and the Supreme Court as well as how legislation is passed and scrutinised in the American system. Day three incorporated guest speaker sessions on voting, elections, campaigning and lobbying and day four allowed for in-depth comparative analysis between the American, British and Nigerian system. The programme culminated with a familiarisation visit on day five including a visit to the State Senate.

All delegates said their objectives had been met and participants praised the event for being well organised and executed, utilising relevant and insightful speakers and covering a vast range of topics and subject matters.

This innovative programme was hugely successful and the group has subsequently approached Dods Training again for further bespoke training.
